11.11.11 My Brother's Wedding

When my youngest brother told us that they were tying the knot this year, I volunteered immediately to make their cake.  I was really excited because I was about to be finally given the opportunity to design my first wedding dessert table.

Cards (brother) and MJ (SIL) didn't ask for any specific design, they just wanted 5 small cakes for their ninongs and ninangs (sponsors), and a simple cake to cater to their small number of guests.

I just asked MJ her favorite color.  I also asked them if they wanted to incorporate a touch of ragnarok (online game) theme into their cupcakes since that's where they met.  They both liked the idea, so there... :)

To add style to the upper part of the dessert table I added paper flowers hanging from the ceiling.

Then Marc spray painted our old basket with white to achieve a shabby chic appeal.  It's where we placed cookie giveaways.  We added the paper flower and hand made sugar flowers to enhance the design.

Btw... those sugar flowers were also hand made.

We originally planned for ragnarok characters as their cake topper, but the weather was weird making it difficult for the gumpaste to harden.  Designing and using cookies as bride and groom cake toppers saved me from more added work. :D

Here's an overall look of my first dessert table.

Right before the newly weds were about to drink their wine, the choco-banana truffles were all gone. =P~

Baby Shower Cupcakes

A friend of my husband asked me to bake banana cupcakes for a baby shower.  I was in the mood to make designs so I made all the designs the hard way, especially the small baby booties.

I had a hard time creating these designs since the weather was weird. Because of the weather, I learned that there are several ways to treat fondant, which is highly dependent on the weather. On hot summer days, you need to have it air dried for the fondant to harden. When it's raining all day you can't do the same thing as it will melt (this puzzles me :-/). So it has to be stored in an airtight container if you want it to harden.

I had to redo all the designs since the first one I made earlier melted.  I have also put a lot of fondant in these goodies since I made a huge batch and I don't want them to stay in my kitchen.  But I realized after that I should have left something for my cream puffs, especially when our client commented that the fondant was too sweet.  Of course it is sweet, it is made up of sugar icing! LOL!  Thin covering should be enough next time.  I hope there will be a next time. :D

The baby booties were the superstar, but I think the "rubber" duckies are cute too!

Don't you think so?

The best thing about this hobby is that you can literally eat your way out of a bad situation!  That is, when the outcome of the design doesn't satisfy your criteria and you start getting a little frustrated.  You can simply eat it (thankfully it doesn't happen often, otherwise I'd have bigger problem loosing weight).  How can you not feel good again once you tasted the fondant's sweetness? ;)

Flower Cupcakes for Mommy's Birthday

Marc's family (my inlaws) are thousands of miles away from us.  7,261 air miles according to Answers.com.  But that doesn't keep us from celebrating their birthdays as well.

So last March, I made cupcakes with sugar flowers for Mommy's (MIL) birthday.

It was my first time to make these kinds of flower icing.

but then again, another beginner's luck.

It helps to pray a lot before beginning to do something, especially for the first time.[-o<

I made these for several consecutive nights after arriving from work.

Mommy has several kinds of flowers in her garden.  Her roses produce flowers all year round even after four years she left for California.  Her wild orchids never fail to bloom according to season.  Very far from the local orchids we bought, which only blossoms flowers once and never again after that one time.

There is also this unique plant that miraculously grows out from the soil when the rainy season starts to fall.  I say miraculously because we thought it had already died during summer, to the point that nothing was left.  What we didn't know was that the roots were just there waiting for the rain to start pouring down.
